The Dazzling World of Suzanne Kalan
Brilliant baguettes and dynamic designs combine like never before.
The Rise of a Jewellery Icon
Born in Lebanon and based in Los Angeles, Suzanne Kalan grew up in a family immersed in the jewellery industry. She learned the craft from a young age and gradually developed a unique design language. In 1988, she founded her own jewellery company and steadily built a cult following. Today, Suzanne Kalan is regarded as one of the world’s most significant fine jewellery designers, with a catalogue full of instantly recognisable and unmistakable creations. At the heart of her work lies one defining element: the baguette cut.
The Queen of Baguettes
The story of how Suzanne Kalan became known as the Queen of the Baguette is one of opportunity seized. Following the global financial downturn of 2008, smaller baguette-cut stones - rectangular or step-cut diamonds - fell out of fashion. Baguettes were often used to frame the main event when it came to stones, but were seen as difficult to work with. Kalan saw an opportunity to showcase the baguette in a completely different way. Suzanne Kalan put the baguette front and centre and made it the star of the show. Kalan's genius was to take the baguette-cut stone—the physical expression of perfect geometry —and place it into settings where symmetry is optional. The fine jewellery of Suzanne Kalan sees baguettes scattered in an asymmetrical manner that feels effortless and casual but is, in fact, the work of masterful design and expertise.
Fireworks and Beyond
Suzanne Kalan’s idiosyncratic approach to baguettes transformed traditional bangle designs into modern, chic, and undeniably cool statements. Her breakthrough came with the Fireworks collection - now an award-winning icon of modern jewellery. Inspired, like many great jewellery ideas, by light, the collection was born from observing how scattered baguettes reflect and refract light, evoking the explosive brilliance of fireworks. So, with her Fireworks design, Kalan aimed to imitate this seemingly random effect in a painstakingly deliberate way. The Fireworks design blew up, and the collection is still at the core of Suzanne Kalan's collections. In the years since, it's been joined by other smart interpretations of the baguette, like the cleverly named Block-Chain, a collection that marries baguettes with interlinked rectangular chains in a contemporary Art Deco style. Then there's the La Fantasie, an ode to the boundless creativity of children, featuring star-like motifs and princess-cut stones.
A Family Business
Family is a constant touchpoint in Kalan's work, serving as an inspiration for many of her designs. Today, Suzanne Kalan isn't the only member of the family creating cutting-edge jewellery. Her daughter Patile Kalan grew up around fine jewellery - so it was only natural that she should join the family business, which is exactly what she did in 2012. Patile designs the brand's 14k collection, which pairs semi-precious stones such as topaz, quartz and amethyst with classic diamonds into playful and contemporary designs like the Amalfi, inspired by the vibrant colours of the Amalfi coast, as well as the Nadima, Cierra and Ann designs, all of which are Patile's way of honouring important family members.
